Start with the exact spelling
Write the complete domain including its extension, then search through a registrar’s availability tool. Check the spelling again at checkout. A result for a similar extension or a suggested alternative is not a result for the name you originally wanted.
Treat availability and price as a point-in-time result. A search does not reserve the name, and the offer may change before you complete registration.
Do not judge availability by a blank website
A domain can be registered without showing a public website. It may be used for email, parked or temporarily unavailable. A browser error does not establish that the domain is available to buy.
Registration lookup services can provide registration information where available. They are not a substitute for a registrar confirming an available registration or explaining a resale offer. Keep personal information obtained from lookups out of your public planning documents.
Recognize an alternative offer
A search result may offer a different extension, a premium name or a brokerage enquiry. Identify which transaction is being proposed before paying. Ask for the initial cost, recurring renewal and any conditions that affect completion.
If the exact name is unavailable, revisit your naming shortlist. Avoid a confusing near-copy solely because it is available. Customer recognition matters alongside the acquisition price.
Use a dated worksheet
Create one row per candidate with full spelling, check date, registration result, quoted currency and price, renewal terms and next action. Mark unknown values as unknown instead of filling them from another domain’s offer.
For a fictional exercise, label candidates A, B and C until you have checked real names. Candidate A might need another spelling test; B might require clarification of renewal pricing; C might be ready for the owner’s final review.
Confirm before committing
Recheck the exact name and terms at checkout, confirm who will control the registrar account and retain the registration receipt. A domain registration is also separate from trademark clearance; seek appropriate advice before relying on the name as your business identity.
After purchase, connect the required services and record the renewal owner. The availability search is the beginning of domain management, not the end.
