Choose the exact name and review the terms
Write the full spelling and extension you intend to register. Read the registrar’s first-term price, renewal price and any premium-name conditions. Keep optional hosting and email purchases separate in your notes so you understand the total.
Availability is not a brand clearance check. Before committing significant branding expenditure, obtain appropriate advice about potential name conflicts in the markets where you will operate.
Keep the business in control
Use an account controlled by the business or the intended owner. If an agency handles the purchase, document the registrant, administrator and handover arrangement. Avoid a setup where only a former contractor can recover access.
Enable the registrar’s available MFA, protect recovery information and keep contact details current. Use an independent recovery route where practical, so a problem with the domain’s own email does not prevent recovery.
Treat renewal as an operational task
ICANN explains that registration must be renewed to keep using the domain and associated services. Renewal options and charges vary by registrar. Record the expiry date, review reminders and keep payment details current if using automatic renewal.
Put responsibility with a named person and a backup contact. A calendar reminder is useful even when auto-renew is enabled; payment failures and account changes still need attention.

Connect services after registration
Identify who will manage DNS, host the website and provide email. Prepare the required records using those providers’ instructions. Domain registration alone should not be mistaken for a completed website or a functioning mailbox.
If replacing an existing setup, export its DNS configuration and plan the change. Do not overwrite mail records merely because a website host offers a one-click connection.
Create a handover record
Record the exact domain, registrar, account owner, expiry date, DNS provider and recovery procedure. Store passwords and recovery secrets separately in an approved secure location. Keep the receipt and renewal quote with the business records, and test that the responsible administrator can sign in.
